António Júlio Duarte has been photographing casino’s lobbies in Macau for the last 10 years.
Shot at night, with a medium format camera and a flash, often in jetlagged mode, the lobbies became Duarte’s personal territory. The absurd luxury of the places combined with the strangeness of the objects, and the absence of human presence, creates a strong dreamlike feeling. We are led through a labyrinth, as if floating.
Thia work is both an important document about the little seen reality of Casino’s in Macau today, and a very personal reflection about East and West, about how to relate to the world through photography.

“It was 1997 and the new millennium was imminent, one could feel the tense anticipation about what was to come next.
I was alone in Japan, a place I had never been before.
During the day I would go out looking for my own sense of the place, photographing in a 6×6 format, exploring notions of center, a place of convergence, as the world expanded before me in its uncertain course. In the night, confined to unfamiliar rooms, I would look at myself, with only the alien sound and images from local TV as a companion, I was lost and felt a need to look at the simple things around me, objects, in an attempt to map a familiar reality, trying to hold on to the idea that things were still the same.
Deviation of the sun is a work about gravity, the ultimate force of placement. I decided to produce it as a book so as to free the images from the vertical decisiveness of the wall, giving the viewer the freedom to look at these images from any given angle and position, and most importantly, from familiar places of their own, at their own pace and rhythm. The viewer is thus in a position to explore the unfamiliarity of these images, and to question their placement, from a familiar vantage point.
Fifteen years later, I felt a need to go back to these images.
The millenium is long gone but the vertigo of uncertainty is yet to disappear.”

Macau was the last remaining European colony in China when the Portuguese transferred back the Sovereignty over Macau to China on the 20th of December 1999. The government in Macau is now headed by a chief executive, who is appointed by the People’s Republic of China’s central government after selection by an election committee, whose members are nominated by local corporate bodies.
In June 2009 Fernando Chui Sai On declared himself the sole candidate for Macau’s chief executive election. He was nominated by 286 members of the 300-member election committee, most with direct ties to Beijing. On election day, the 26th of July 2009, 282 committee members voted for Chui (14 blank, 4 abstention).
António Júlio Duarte followed Fernando Chui Sai On when he was leading his campaign in the streets of Macau in July 2009.
